Piece:
Unearthing
About the music
Kaleidoscope by Charlotte Eardley
As a simple starting point, I wanted to produce a piece that only had two sound sources; sounds that had been produced by my violin, and synthesised sounds. I was excited by the idea of creating a piece where the main sound source would not be easily identifiable by just listening to the music.
Whilst some of the sounds do not appear very abstract, they are not as you would expect them to be presented. The sound material has been processed, manipulated, and transformed; however, it was also important that a coherence was maintained throughout the piece. To ensure coherence, certain sounds reappear in a different context, giving a sense of foreshadowing, whereas other sounds have been processed differently upon their return.
The idea of the music being organised like a ‘kaleidoscope’ presented itself early on in the compositional process, reflecting its meaning with the distinct collections of sounds shifting and combining in multiple ways, producing a variety of viewpoints. This occurs throughout, with certain elements being foreshadowed and other parts being combined with different material in new contexts. It has a complexity that is non-exhaustive allowing for infinite possibilities.
